Microsoft has shared the roadmap of the upcoming features and improvements for the Chromium-based Edge browser. The Edge team also revealed that feedback from testers has helped Microsoft to introduce features such as dark theme, built-in Bing Translate, privacy controls, favorites bar and more.

The company has also highlighted the changes it plans to introduce in the Canary channel next month:

  • Edge will finally get a built-in feature to block auto-playing video audio.
  • Scrolling improvements.
  • Microsoft is also adding a favorites button to the toolbar and it will be similar to the one we have in classic Edge. The feature has already been enabled for some users in the Canary channel.

Microsoft is working on the following features for October release:

  • The new Microsoft Edge will also allow you to sign PDF documents with a stroke of your stylus.
  • The profile picture in the bar will be updated more often. Microsoft is also improving support for multiple profiles in Edge.
  • You will be able to customize the background image on the New Tab Pae (NTP) with your own wallpapers or photos.
  • The Edge extensions store will get search integration.

Apart from the aforementioned improvements, the Redmond firm is also working on a series of changes to reduce CPU and memory usages.

Microsoft Edge is currently available through Beta channel, which receives updates every six weeks, Dev channel, which is updated once a week, and Canary which is updated regularly.

Edge Stable leaked

In related news, Microsoft has also launched the first beta update of Edge browser. Unlike the Canary version of the browser, the beta version will receive major updates every six months.

Edge Beta is not complete in all aspects and it doesn’t come with all the features which are available in the Canary version.

Microsoft’s next big update Windows 10 20H1 is expected to come with minor improvements for the Optional Features setting page.

Windows 10’s Settings app comes with an Optional Features page which allows users to manage, install, and uninstall optional features such as Windows Media Player. The company is working on adding new tools to further enhance the Optional Features setting.

Windows 10 20H1 could add support for sorting and searching on the Optional Features page, so you can easily search for a feature or sort the list by its name or download size.

For example, if you want to uninstall Windows Media Player, you can use the search box and find the item quickly instead of manually scrolling through the long list.

Optional Features page

Microsoft is also planning to remove regional packs from the list of optional features.

The new and improved version is currently in internal testing and is expected to be pushed out to insiders in the upcoming builds.

Other leaked Windows 10 20H1 improvements

Microsoft is also working on several other improvements for Windows 10 20H1, including inline text suggestion feature when typing with the hardware keyboard.

Windows 10 leak recently revealed that Microsoft is working on a new version of Start Menu and Control Center, though these changes may not ship with Windows 10 20H1.

Microsoft is expected to release Windows 10 20H1 to all devices in the spring of 2020 and preview builds are already available for users enrolled in the Fast Ring.

Since the launch of the new Chromium-based Edge browser, Microsoft has been working on bringing many new features. One of the top features that Microsoft is working on is the support for sync options similar to Google’s Chrome.

The Redmond firm is working on bringing synchronization support to the Microsoft Edge making it possible to automatically sync data from one app to another running on other platforms.

In the near future, if you have Edge on both Windows 10 and Android with same Microsoft account, you will be able to sync all the information like favourites, etc. Settings can also be synchronized helping in a seamless transition between platforms.

Currently, Chromium-based Microsoft Edge allows users to sync favourites across platforms. In Edge Dev, only two sync options – Favourites and Settings can be enabled, but Edge Canary is also allowing users to enable sync support for new options such as addresses, phone numbers, and passwords.

Sync features in Edge Canary

The new sync option is yet to become available for all Edge Insiders and the feature may not work even if it is enabled in your browser. Users are reporting that this could be part of A/B testing as some are still not seeing the new sync options in the browser.

In a blog post, Microsoft recently stated that it will be rolling out new features to a small randomly selected subset of Canary & Dev channel before enabling it for all testers.

You can find the sync feature by navigating to Microsoft Edge > Settings > Profiles > Sync settings.

Other improvements

Microsoft Edge was recently updated with an experimental flag for Windows Spellchecker feature. Windows Spellchecker replaces the Hunspell spell checker, which is the same engine that currently powers Google Chrome, LibreOffice and other apps.

Microsoft is working on several other improvements for Chromium open-source project, including deeper integration with Windows 10 Settings, touchpad scrolling improvements and more.

Microsoft hasn’t created a Surface device with ARM since 2013, but it appears that the company is planning to give this initiative another shot. According to reports, Microsoft is closely working with Qualcomm on a new Snapdragon processor for its flagship Surface Pro device.

If rumours are believed to be true, Surface Pro “Excalibur” with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx processor is being developed at Redmond. Excalibur is the internal codename for a custom SoC that will power the Surface Pro and it is reportedly designed from the ground up for Always Connected PCs.

The new Qualcomm processor would be specifically optimized for Windows 10 and it is expected to deliver performance equivalent to an Intel Core i5 processor. While the performance would be nearly same, ARM-powered Surface Pro will apparently offer a longer battery life.

Snapdragon 8cx featured

Snapdragon-powered Surface device could give a much-needed boost to Always Connected PCs initiative. Microsoft’s investment in Snapdragon devices may encourage other manufacturers to adopt it for their own models.

Surface Pro with Snapdragon processor could be announced later this year and other hardware specs are unknown at the moment.

Surface’s design overhaul

The long-rumoured Surface Pro codenamed Carmel with overhauled design has been pushed back and it could be announced sometime next year.

At the October 2019 event, Microsoft will also announce new upgrades for other Surface models, including Surface Book.

On the other hand, Microsoft’s long-rumoured Surface foldable device may ship with Intel 10nm Lakefield chip instead of the ARM processor.

Microsoft is testing several new features for its new Edge browser on Windows 10, including Collections and better privacy tools. Microsoft is working on another nifty feature that would allow you to configure autoplay media settings and it’ll be similar to what we have in old Edge.

Microsoft Edge engineer Kyle Pflug confirmed that autoplay setting is coming to new Edge, but there’s no ETA at the moment.

In a tweet, Kyle noted that the feature will have global and per site setting, delivering the experience that we already have in old Edge. At the moment, Chromium Edge does not allow users to block the autoplay videos.

https://twitter.com/kylealden/status/1138525002330923008

The new feature will give users control over media autoplay on the Internet and it will also users to configure autoplay rules for media. In old Edge, the default setting is to allow autoplay but you can modify or set your own rules to block all auto-playing contents.

Other improvements planned

Microsoft is also working on improving the scrolling performance of the browser and it remains to be the main focus of the engineering team.

At Build 2019 developer conference, Microsoft also teased a new privacy dashboard for Edge.

The new privacy dashboard aims to make things easier to understand for users. Edge will have a dashboard featuring three levels of privacy – unrestricted, balanced, and strict. The privacy tool is designed to block or restrict trackers and cookies.

  • Unrestricted: This will allow all trackers and you’ll also see personalized ads. When the unrestricted mode is turned on, sites will function correctly.
  • Balanced: This mode aims to blocks trackers from unvisited sites, but you’ll continue to see advertisements based on other sites that you visited recently. Sites will continue to function smoothly in Balanced level.
  • Strict: As the name suggests, it will potential trackers and ads will be reduced as well, but this could break some sites.

Microsoft recently revealed its intention to bring improved autoscrolling to Chromium-based browsers, including Edge and Chrome. This may allow users to smoothly scroll on a long and heavy page by holding the arrow button.

Google is testing a new feature called Tab Groups for Chrome in the latest Canary builds. The feature is designed to organize your browsing experience by allowing you to group tabs.

You can enable the feature from Chrome’s flags menu by searching for ‘Tab Groups’. Once enabled, you will be able to add tabs to a group by select ‘Add to new group option’ which appears when you right-click the tab. Once a group is created, you can add another tab to a new or the same group.

This feature is expected to be rolled out to the public with Chrome 77, ETA for which hasn’t yet been announced by Google.

Chrome Tab Groups

Pin Tabs with Drag and Drop feature

Google is also testing another new feature to helps you to Pin Tabs with Drag and Drop. This feature is currently under testing in the Canary build of Google Chrome. To pin a tab in Chrome, you need to right click > Pin tab. Pinning tab is already available in the Chrome browser, but Google is working on modifying the feature.

Google will now allow users to pin and unpin a tab by dragging and dropping tabs from one side to the other. The company is working on this feature due to the increase in the number of pinned tabs.

But for the drag and drop feature to work, you would first need to pin a tab by right click > Pin Tab function and then you will easily be able to drag and drop tabs over the pinned tab.

To unpin the tab, you need to drag it from the left side of the screen and place it where normal tabs are located. As noted, this feature is being tested in the Canary version of Google Chrome and can be enabled with  the following flag:

  • Drag to Modify Tab Pinnedness

Once enabled, restart the browser to access the feature.

There is currently no ETA announced as to when all these changes will be made available to the public version of the Chrome browser.
